Quran and Science
Hafiz Aziz
Quran is not a book of Science but a book of ‘Signs’. These signs tell mankind to realize the purpose of their existence on earth. Quran provides information on everything, since the ultimate purpose of it is to teach mankind about the “Oneness” of Allah, it contains other matters as a reference or sings or summaries. The scientific evidences of the Quran clearly prove its Divine origin. No human could have produced a book, fourteen hundred years ago, that would contain such profound scientific facts. Quran talks about how creation first began; how the earth and heavens were created; how the water gushed forth from the depth of the earth; how the mountains were anchored on land; how vegetation first began; and….. Quran also mentions certain historical events, to lay down the rules of personal and social good conduct and morality and the principles of a happy, harmonious social life. If Quran had mentioned modern scientific discoveries in details, the people of earlier times would not have been able to understand them.
The Big Bang theory: Big Bang theory states that around 12-15 billion years ago the universe came into existence from one single extremely hot and dense point and that something triggered an explosion that brought about the beginning of the universe. Quran says, “Don’t they not see that the heavens and the Earth were once one mass, then We rent them apart?" [21:30]. This verse shows that the universe had a beginning that Allah was behind its creation. Muslim scholars mention that the heavens and earth were once one and then Allah caused them to separate and form into the seven heavens and Earth. The theory also says that the universe since then has been expanding from this single point. Quran in this matter says, "And it is We who have constructed the heaven with might, and verily, it is We who are steadily expanding it." [51:47].
Planets: Science tells us how planets get light from the sun and how they follow a specific pattern. Quran says, “It is He Who created the Night and the Day, and the sun and the moon: All swim along, each in itsrounded course.” [21:33] - "The sun and the moon follow courses precisely computed" [55:5] - "It is He who made the sun to light up (the sky) and the moon that is lit." [10:5] - "He has ordained the sun and the moon, each one runs (it's course) for an appointed time." [13:2]
Mountains: Geologists tell us that mountains act like stakes or tent pegs that hold the earth’s crust and give it stability. Quran says, “Have We not made the earth as a wide expanse and the mountains as pegs?” [78:6] - “And We have set on the earth mountains standing firm, lest it should shake with them.” [21:31]
Clouds and Lightening: Scientists have studied cloud types and have realized that clouds are formed according to definite systems and certain steps connected with certain types of wind. Quran says, “Have you not seen how God makes the clouds move gently, then joins them together, then makes them into a stack, and then you see the rain come out of it....” [24:43]. Science says, a cloud becomes electrified as hail falls through a region in the cloud of super cooled droplets and ice crystals. Quran says, “....And He sends down hail from mountains (clouds) in the sky, and He strikes with it whomever He wills, and turns it from whomever He wills. The vivid flash of its lightning nearly blinds the sight.” [24:43]
Earth’s shape: As countless photos from space can attest, earth is round, however not a perfect round. Quran says, “And we have made the earth egg shaped (Ostrich egg)” [79:30]. The word ‘Dahaha’ means egg shaped, which is specifically refers to the egg of an Ostrich which is geospherical in shape, exactly like the shape of the earth. Thus the Quran and modern established science are in perfect harmony.
Necessity of Water for life: Quran says, “He sends down rain from the sky and with it gives life to the earth after it is dead: Verily in that are Signs for those who are wise.” [30:24] - “And We send down water from the sky according to (due) measure, and We cause it to soak in the soil; and We certainly are able to drain it off (with ease).” [23:18]
Water Barriers in seas/rivers: Science has discovered that in the places where two different rivers/seas meet, there is a barrier between them. This barrier divides the two seas so that each has its own temperature, salinity, and density. Quran says, “He has let free the two bodies of flowing water, meeting together: Between them is a Barrier which they do not transgress.” [55:19]
Plants: Botany states that every plant has a male and female gender. Even the plants that are unisex have distinct elements of both male and female. Quran says, "And has sent down water from the sky.’ With it have We produced diverse pairs of plants each separate from the others.” [20:53] - “And fruit of every kind He made in pairs, two and two.” [13:3]
Water in human body: Science says that the human body has about 60 percent water. Quran says, "… and We made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?" [21:30]
The Cerebrum: Science says that the cerebrum (front of the skull/brain) is responsible for planning, initiating good and sinful behavior and is responsible for the telling of lies and truth. Quran says, “No, If he does not stop, We will take him by the forelock (front of the skull/fringe), a lying, sinful forelock” [96:15]
Embryonic Development: Scientists recently discovered the different stages of embryo development. Quran says, “We created man from an extract of clay. Then We made him as a drop in a place of settlement, firmly fixed. Then We made the drop into an alaqah (leech, suspended object and blood clot), then We made the alaqah into a mudghah (chewed substance)…” [23:12]. This verse describes the creation and development of an embryo.
Please sit down for a moment
بِسْمِ اللّهِ ، والْحَمْدُ ِلّهِ ، والصّلَاةُ والسّلَامُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللّهِ ، صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَم
Quran’s primary aim is to make Oneness of Almighty Allah known to mankind. It also refers to events and scientific facts, in proportion to their importance. The meaning of a verse may be compared to a rosebud, it is hidden by successive layers of petals and a new meaning is perceived as each petal unfolds, and people discover one of those meanings according to their capacity. Islam has founded knowledge and the quest for it on the intention of discovering the meaning of existence in order to reach the Creator. May Allah lead us all to the right path – Ameen.
