Jariyah means continuous and Sadaqah Jariyah is referred to as ongoing charity. This type of charity will earn a person continuous rewards for as long as others benefit from that action/deed - even after the person’s death.  PBUH said, “When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah (ongoing charity); knowledge which is beneficial; a virtuous children who prays for him” [Muslim].    When we depart from this world, our book of deeds closes and there is no return to this life to add to our good deeds or to repent for the sins committed.  However, out of His infinite mercy, Allah SWT has showed us ways to earn rewards for certain actions that would continue to be documented in our book of good deeds even after our death.   Allah SWT says: “… and spend something (in charity) out of the provision which we have bestowed you, before death should come to any of you and he should say, O my Rab! Why do you not give me respite for a little while? I should then have given (largely) in charity, and I should have been one of the doers of good.” [63:10].    Following are some examples of Sadaqah Jariyah which would benefit a believer and earn him/her rewards even after  the person’s death – InshaAllah.

Donate to and/or help build a Mosque in which Muslims go for prayer.  You will be rewarded for every single prayer performed in it by others for as long as the mosque exists.

Teach someone to recite Quran.  Every time that person recites a word from Quran, you will get rewards for his/her recitation.  If this person teaches Quran to another person, then every time that person reads Quran, you will get rewards from that person recitation as well.

Donate to and/or help build an Orphanage where orphans are sheltered. Orphans have a special place in Islam and Allah SWT will greatly reward anyone who contributes to raising an orphan. For as long as this orphanage is open to house orphans you will get rewards for it.

Give out copies of the Holy Quran to mosques and Islamic institutions. Every time a person reads a word from that Quran which you provided, you will receive rewards for it. 

Donate to and/or help dig a water well or water pump/tank.  Every time a person uses this well to get clean water for drinking or performing Wudu, you will be rewarded for every drop of it.

Give guidance to Muslims who are not practicing Islam and bring them back to religion so they start praying, pay Zakat, or …. For every good deed this person does which is due to your guidance, you will be rewarded.

Invite non-Muslims to Islam. If you guide a non believer to the right path, reward for that is beyond our imagination. For as long as that person is alive and for any good deed this person does that is due to your guidance, you will get rewarded for it.

Raise virtuous children who follow the teaching of Islam through your guidance. This act gives parents a special place in Paradise. Raising a Muslim child is a great responsibility, it requires us to understand the difference between raising a good child and raising a good Muslim child who understands and practices Islam. 

Donate to and/or help build a Hospital. Every patient treated there would earn you rewards.

Plant trees or donate for this cause. Every time a person sits under the shade or eat from the fruit of it, you will gain rewards for it.
