Seeking the Shade of Allah’s Mercy

Seeking the Shade of Allah’s Mercy

Hafiz Aziz

On the Day of Resurrection the sun would draw so close to the mankind that there would be left a distance of only one mile. Prophet PBUH said, “There are 7 types of people who will be shaded on the day when there will be no shade but Allah's shade”. To be under Allah’s throne shade is to be protected by Him and be blessed by Him. In this Hadith, Prophet PBUH spoke about small acts of worship which result in such a huge reward. On that day everyone will be worried and will try to find some protection and shade. No mother will think of her son and no father will be worried of her daughter rather everyone will be busy in protecting themselves from the burning sun. The characteristics and virtues of these seven categories of people who will be worthy of such an exalted position on the Day of Gathering are:

A Just Ruler:  Justice means to give each person the right they deserve; Muslim or non-Muslim, relative or stranger, friend or enemy, rich or poor. Justice is the command of Allah for all people; but the most critical is doing of justice when one has power and the authority. A person who has the authority and uses it with fairness without any favoritism or prejudice will be blessed by Allah. The concept of justice is most important for the leaders, since they are in charge of their people and the primary disposer of justice. A ruler must keep in mind that Allah is the only one who can raise the ranks and if they are in any position to rule or command, it is only because of Allah’s mercy on them.

A young person growing up in the worship of Allah:  Worship of Allah is good for all people at any age and time; however, the youth are specifically mentioned because this age is the most likely time for the overpowering of the carnal desires. Some people say I will worship Allah more when I am older; but how can you be so sure that you will even live until you are older? To be in the obedience of Allah from youth bring a special honor and blessings to that person since it is in youth that a person is most vulnerable to the temptations of life and liable to drift away from the Islamic Path. Prophet PBUH said, “Take benefit of five before five: your youth before your old age, your health before your sickness, your wealth before your poverty, your free time before you are preoccupied and your life before your death.”

A person whose attachment is with the mosques:  It means a person whose heart is attached to the mosque when he leaves it until he returns to it; a person who when leaves the mosque looks forward to coming back to it soon. This attachment to the mosque is due to immense love of it for being the house of worship and finding in it the spirit of closeness and obedience of Allah.

Love for the sake of Allah:  This is a sincere friendship when two or more people become attached to each other for Allah’s sake. This is a kind of friendship that generates goodness in the world and is blessed by Allah. Having mutual love for the sake of Allah is one of the great doors leading to the good of the Hereafter and a cause of tasting the sweetness of Iman in this world. So it does not matter what the person looks like, what he\she wears, how rich or poor they are, what the colour of his\her skin is - perhaps you dislike everything about him\her, but you love them for being a Muslim; this is to love for the sake of Allah.  Allah SWT says, “The believers are nothing else than brothers, so make reconciliation between your brothers, and fear Allah, that you may receive mercy.” [49:10]

Solid Moral Character:  A Person who is invited to do immorality/adultery and refuses it by saying “I am afraid of Allah”;  this is a person of solid moral character.  If a man is tempted for illicit relationship by a woman who is beautiful and influential but he refuses due to the fear of Allah then Allah will bless him for his action.  This equally applies to a woman who may be tempted by a man and she refuses and says “I fear Allah”.  It requires a lot of moral strength to refuse temptation when the other partner is attractive and not only consenting but persuasive. Those who have such a strong character they are indeed under the protection of Allah. Allah has warned HIS followers from indulging in adultery and says, “And come not near to the adultery. Verily, it is a shameful (deed) and an evil way (that leads one to Hell).” [17:32]

A person who gives charity secretly:  This means a person gives charity in such a way that even his\her left hand does not know what his right hand has done. This is a person who gives charity discreetly with sincerity and does not Show Off and seek publicity, name or fame; but only to please Allah. This is the highest kind of charity and has a special reward and blessing from Allah. This describes the type of person who goes to great lengths to protect himself from 'Ar-Riya' (show off).  Some people do deeds in order to earn the praise and recognition of people; this act destroys all the benefits that lie in righteous deeds and brings on punishment for the one who commits it.

A person who remembers Allah privately and his\her eyes fills with tears:  Thinking of Allah, praying to Allah, repeating His Names, thanking Him, praising Him, reciting Quran, and… are some the ways to remember Allah. Doing 'Dhikr' (remembrance) alone in one’s privacy, when no one is watching, with moving heart and tearful eyes is a sign of sincere faith and deep love of Allah. Our Prophet PBUH, who was the best of all creation, would weep as would all of his Companions. Tears are a genuine expression of awareness of Allah's sincere love and fear of Him. You could even be among others but only Allah is on your mind not caring about people seeing you shed tears. Prophet PBUH said, “There is nothing more beloved to Allah than two drops and two marks: Drops are, a tear shed due to fear of Allah, and a drop of blood spilled in the path of Allah. And as for the two marks, a mark caused in the path of Allah, and a mark caused by fulfilling one of the duties made obligatory by Allah”. Prophet PBUH said, “There are two eyes that the Fire will never touch, the eye that wept from fear of Allah and the eye that stood guard in the night in Allah’s path.”

Please sit down for a moment

بِسْمِ اللّهِ ،  والْحَمْدُ ِلّهِ ،  والصّلَاةُ والسّلَامُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللّهِ ،  صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَم

These seven characters are deep moral and spiritual characters that indicate a person’s faith and sincere commitment. They are related to feeling, thinking, speaking and action and are true characters of sincere believers.  Through these seven types of people mentioned in the above Hadith, we have been given signposts of the way to attain Allah’s pleasure and satisfaction. It is also important to know is that this Hadith talks about both genders: men and women equally. Indeed fortunate will be those who are granted Allah’s Shade on the Day when there will be no shade but His. Those in the Shade of Allah’s throne may not be just limited to the seven categories of people mentioned above - Allah knows best - We pray to Allah to bless us with these characters and with His shade in this world and in the Hereafter. – Ameen.
