Virtues of Wudu
Virtues of Wudu
Hafiz Aziz
One of the greatest aspects of our faith is purification. Wudu is a means of purification of the body as well as the soul; it is the key of Salah (prayer) and the most important condition of its validity. Allah SWT mentions in the holy Quran, “O you who believe! When you intend to offer Salah, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, wipe your heads, and (wash) your feet up to the ankles. If you are in a state of Janaba, purify yourselves (wash - make Ghusul). But if you are ill or on a journey or any of you come from responding to the call of nature, or you have been in contact with women and you find no water, then perform Tayammum with clean earth and rub therewith your faces and hands. Allah does not want to place you in difficulty, but He wants to purify you, and to complete His favour to you that you may be thankful.'' [5:6]. Virtues of Wudu are many following are some mentioned in Hadiths:
Expiation of sins: To perform Wudu in a proper manner is a mean for forgiveness of minor sins. Prophet PBUH said, “He who performs Wudu perfectly his sins will depart from his body, even from under his nails” [Muslim] - Prophet PBUH said, “When a believer washes his face in the course of Wudu, every sin which he committed with his eyes, will be washed away from his face with water; when he washes his hands, every sin which is committed by his hands will be effaced from his hands with the water, or with the last drop of water; and when he washes his feet, every sin his feet committed will be washed away with the water, or with the last drop of water; until he finally emerges cleansed of all his sins.” [Muslim]. The wisdom of washing these particular parts of the body during Wudu is because they are the most likely parts to be used in doing actions. With these parts, a person may obey or disobey Allah.
On the Judgment day believers will be shining: On the Judgment day believers will be distinguished from other communities by virtue of the glow and the radiant light shining from their faces, hands and feet from the traces of performing Wudu. Prophet PBUH said, “On the day of Resurrection, my followers will be summoned ‘Al-Ghurr Al-Muhajjalun‘ (which means shining or white) from the traces of Wudu; Whoever can increase the area of his radiance should do so.” [Bukhari] - He PBUH once went to a cemetery and said, “May you be secured from punishment O dwellers of abode of the believers! We, if Allah wills, will follow you. I wish we see my brothers”. The Companions asked, “O Messenger of Allah! Are we not your brothers?” He said, “You are my Companions, but my brothers are those who have not come into the world yet.” They asked “How will you recognize those of your Ummah who are not born yet?” He PBUH responded, “Say, if a man has white-footed horses with white foreheads among horses which are pure black, will he not recognize his own horses?” The companion said; “Certainly”, He PBUH then said, “My followers will come with bright faces and white limbs because of performing Wudu; and I will arrive at the Haud (Al-Kauthar) ahead of them”. [Muslim]
Performing Wudu in hardship elevates the rank: Hardship and unpleasantness here stand for the uneasiness that one feels while performing the Wudu. Prophet PBUH said, "Shall I not tell you something by which Allah effaces the sins and elevates ranks (in Paradise)?'' The Companions said; "Certainly, O Messenger of Allah.'' He PBUH said, "Performing Wudu thoroughly in spite of difficult circumstances, walking with more paces to the mosque, and waiting for the next Salah after observing Salah; and that is Ar-Ribat, and that is Ar-Ribat.'' [Muslim]
Adornment of a believer: The adornment of a believer in Paradise will reach up to where the water reached his\her body. Prophet PBUH said, “The adornment of the believer (in Jannah) will reach the places where the water of Wudu reaches.” [Muslim]
Supplication after Wudu: Saying the second Kalima after wudu is a means of entering Paradise. Prophet PBUH said, "Whoever of you performs Wudu carefully and then affirms: `Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallahu Wahdahu la sharika Lahu, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa Rasuluhu (I testify that there is no true God except Allah, Who has no partners and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger)' the eight gates of Jannah are opened for him. He may enter through whichever of these gates he desires.'' [Muslim]
Sleeping in the state of having Wudu: The virtue of getting into bed in a state of having wudu is great. It is narrated that, “the person who goes to bed in a state of having Wudu' and starts sleeping by making remembrance of Allah is considered to be performing Ibadauntil he\she wakes up. An angel will pray for that person saying "O my Lord, forgive this slave of Yours", Allah will bestow His blessing on this person and angles will not leave him\her alone.

Since Islamic laws are based upon facility and ease, Allah SWT has lightened the burden of worship on those who have some excuse. If a person is unable to clean him\herself of impurity with the water by making Wudu due to sickness, old age, or any reason, then he\she may perform Tayamum (Dry ablution using sand or dust) – Indeed Allah is most forgiving and kind on those whose intention are to please Him. May Allah make us among those who constantly purify themselves, inwardly and outwardly - Ameen.
